The First JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Anime

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Notice the lack of ‘Stardust Crusaders’.

Remember how I said a while ago that I was going to talk about the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure OVA? Well, it’s about time I did!

As some of you may not be aware, the 2014/2015 anime about the third arc of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, known as Stardust Crusaders, was not the first animated adaptation of the series. Back in 1993, an OVA (or Original Video Animation) was released, encompassing Jotaro’s journey to Egypt.

Of course, if this OVA were exactly like the series I recently reviewed I wouldn’t have to talk about it for long. It’s different; honestly, it’s different and a little confusing. Let’s start at the beginning:

A company named A.P.P.P. (Another Push Pin Planning) acquired the rights to animate Stardust Crusaders a little before 1993. This wasn’t too long after the manga had been completed; its final chapter was published in 1992.

Now, if you’re old enough to have watched older Japanese animation (from the late eighties to early nineties,) you’ll probably already assume that this OVA looks a bit different from the recent adaptation, not only in style, but technique. A prime example would be CG; the recent Stardust Crusaders anime used it fairly liberally, whereas, well, the old one really wouldn’t. Thing is, the old OVA chose to follow drastically different character designs, which I found extremely interesting. We’ll go over that in specifics in later posts, though.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Now Available on Amazon

The first two and a half parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are now available to stream on Amazon. This is pretty cool! Considering that the last animated piece to be released in America was the 1993/2000 OVA for Stardust Crusaders (which I’ll talk about in another post, promise) this is pretty big news.

Episode 48: Long Journey Farewell, My Friends

DIO, a balanced individual.
DIO, a balanced individual.

Here we are, folks! The final episode of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders is upon us at last. I was completely wrong about its air date, since I naively assumed that the series would reach 52 episodes; I hadn’t read the manga, though, so I didn’t know exactly how long the DIO fight was. Oops!

Am I complaining that the series was too short? Not at all. I just thought it’d be 52 episodes since many two-part anime series run that long, but the lack of filler here made it so we stopped at 48. This means that Sailor Moon Crystal (which I didn’t forget about, I swear) will be the only currently-airing series I’ll be reviewing for the next few weeks, but that’ll be over soon, as well.

I’ll figure out ideas for more content by the time that’s over. For now, though, sit back and enjoy our last Stardust Crusaders episode!

DIO’s World, Part 3

 scene12921

I’m finally feeling less sad about the last episode, which is a good thing because I seriously don’t have time to just sit around and mope about a depressing scene in an anime. I mean, I think it’s great when you get emotionally involved in something fictional, like a book or movie, don’t get me wrong. I just think that dwelling on an emotion-provoking incident is a bad idea.

So, moving along; we’re probably on the final stretch here with Stardust Crusaders. I have no idea how much longer this fight will continue, honestly, but I doubt we’ll get to 52 episodes like I originally thought.

Am I ready for this wild ride to end? I think so.

DIO’s World, Part 2

scene29541
I know, I’m choosing the very last frame in the episode as my header image. It works, though.

I’m not going to lie. I kind of dreaded reviewing this episode. Have you ever felt like you could kind of tell what was going to happen in something, be it a book, movie, or show and you didn’t really want to continue reading or watching because you were worried you might be right? That’s how I felt going into this, since the end of the previous episode set us up for something potentially happening to my favorite Stardust Crusaders character.

Sigh. Well, no matter what, I’m going to have to review this, so I guess I should begin.

DIO’s World, Part 1

It's DIO's World!
It’s DIO’s World!

If you follow my Twitter (and you should if you enjoy my writing!) you’ll know that I went on vacation and then caught a cold, which is why I’m just now squeaking out these reviews. I’m hideously late. That being said, I’m going to catch up with a vengeance because we’re at the part of the series everyone’s been anxiously waiting for – the DIO fight!

I expect a lot to go on during these final episodes, so I’m going to keep the introductions brief.
