Skoshbox Review July 2017
As you may or may not have noticed, I didn’t get around to doing a Skoshbox review last month. The box wasn’t anything special, though, so you weren’t missing out on much!
The way Skoshbox (or Tokyo Otaku Mode) has shipped out their boxes to its customers has changed starting this month, so the timing on these reviews won’t be nearly as consistent as it used to be. (Though it was never super consistent in the first place, heh.) The boxes are coming directly from Japan to the United States via SAL, which is very inconsistent but usually slow. I order SAL items fairly often and sometimes they come in two weeks, others a month.
So, I can’t guarantee when reviews will come out, but I hope that they are within the first half of the month. I’d hate to have multiple boxes to review at once!
Anyway, to the review for July 2017!
Cubie: Strawberry Choco
These are simple chocolates with strawberry creme inside.
Not much to say about them; the chocolate is smooth and pleasant and the strawberry meshes well with it.
These are avocado and Camembert cheese crackers. I LOVE avocado so I was super excited to try these.
They aren’t perfect, unfortunately, as the avocado flavor is masked some by the cheese. Since the name of the cracker is AVOCADOoza, I have to ding one point on the score.
The cheese flavor isn’t bad at all, it reminds me of a nice blue cheese, but it’s a bit strong.
This is a very interesting pack of gummies in the shape of grapes.
I was impressed that they really did look like grapes, but the texture was even more impressive. They felt like grapes, too!
The flavor is a little strong on them, though, and I personally found them a tad too tart.
This is a pack of rice cracker snacks flavored like soy sauce. Really simple, really good.
I could have eaten more of these, easily.
This is a cute little gummy kit where you put pieces together in the shape of sushi. The gummies are fruit flavored; the rice gummies are mainly sweet and go well with every other flavor.
The texture is just a standard gummy one, nothing too sticky or firm.
Black Black Candy
I thought this was coffee candy at first, and so I was a bit disappointed when I tried it.
This candy is a mint. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s minty flavor is really strong, however, almost too strong. I found that it clears the nasal passages well!
The color is a deep black, hence the name.
Note: All of the items from this point forward were part of a dagashi pack, which was marked as a bonus. Hopefully all Skoshboxes will include this in the future, otherwise the value may not be worth it.
Fried Pork Katsu Jerky
This jerky is supposed to taste like pork, but I swear I only taste fish sticks. The panko breading on the outside is nice, but reminds me of fish sticks for some reason, and the inside of the jerky mainly copies the breading’s flavor.
This isn’t bad by any means, but not what I expected. I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat this again.
This was a pack of small green apple flavored mochi candy. The mochi here has a different texture than that of the mochi in April’s box, but that’s not a bad thing. The mochi here is actually more like a chewy candy, and easier to eat.
The flavor is what you would expect, so that’s good too.
This is a jerky strip in the style of Chinese barbecue. (I only knew this after looking it up) The jerky is really tough, and the flavor is really strong. I’d say the flavor was somewhat spicy and sweet. I personally didn’t enjoy this and ended up throwing most of it out, unfortunately.
There was also a Mashuro (marshmallow) snack and fruit soda gum, both of which I’ve either reviewed in the past or are very similar to something I’ve reviewed before. They were fine.
Overall rating for July 2017: A great value!
This box was packed with a lot of stuff, which I really liked. I hope that the future boxes look like this, but the addition of the word ‘bonus’ with the dagashi pack items worries me a little. The new shipping system can be a lot slower and more inconsistent than before, so if the next box doesn’t have as many items as this one I may have to look into another Japanese snack subscription. We’ll see!
