Skoshbox Review August 2017

Skoshbox Review August 2017

This month’s box arrived a little later than last month’s, to no surprise. I was pretty wary about delivery times when Tokyo Otaku Mode/Skoshbox had shifted over to shipping from Japan directly, as I stated last review. The box was too beat up to even take a picture of, so it’s not here this time. Thankfully, only one snack inside was completely crushed, and it didn’t taste great to me anyway so it wasn’t a big loss.

Moving on to the review:

Fran: Strawberry

Fran: Strawberry

Apparently, Fran is Meiji’s take on Glico’s Pocky cookie. That’s not a bad thing at all, as Fran is not exactly the same.

This variety is the strawberry one, which just so happens to be my favorite basic Pocky flavor. I was super excited to try these because of that, and they didn’t let me down.

The cookie is thicker than Pocky, and the strawberry coating is generous — it kind of reminds me of the Giant Pocky variety, but without the strawberry sugar crystals.

Strawberry Fran is very satisfying, and definitely worth a try if you can find it anywhere!

Strawberry Fran is available via a third party seller on Amazon as of the time of this post.

Umaiwa: Takoyaki

Umaiwa: Takoyaki

These are little corn rings flavored like takoyaki. As I’ve probably stated in the past, I’ve never eaten takoyaki, so I can’t state if these are true to the flavor or not. To me, they tasted very savory and almost saucy, like a barbecue sauce.

The texture of the rings is light, so you can eat a decent amount of them at once without feeling too full.

I enjoyed them, but I really can’t say if they taste like takoyaki.

Japanese Steak Umaibo

It’s been some time since an Umaibo was sent in a Skoshbox! Sadly, this one didn’t make the trip here very safely as you can see…

By the flavor name, I assume these are supposed to taste like a prepared Japanese steak with seasonings. Unfortunately, to me, these just tasted like spice.

A lot of spice.

I tried several bites, but I ended up tossing it out, as it was just too spicy.

I didn’t get any hints of steak, either.

Puchi: Ebi Senbei

Puchi Ebi Senbei

Much like last month’s Puchi rice crackers, these are simple little crackers in a plastic sleeve. They are made from shrimp and taste savory, but not too fishy to me.

They’re light, and easy to just snack on. Not much else to say!

Funwari Cake

Funwari Cake

This is a chocolate cake slice, and I’m really surprised it made it to me in one piece! It’s very hot outside right now, so I’m fairly shocked this didn’t turn into a mess in its little package.

Anyway, it has a nice texture, kind of like a flourless cake, but the taste is somewhat strange to me. It does taste like chocolate, but it also has a Fig Newton kind of undertone to it, for some reason.

It’s not bad, but not quite what I expected.

Gochi: Blood Orange

Gochi Blood Orange
Gochi Blood Orange

This is a standard gummy candy coated in sugar crystals. I’ve definitely reviewed some in prior months very similar to this.

The flavor is blood orange, and luckily it’s not too tart. The texture is also nice, and not super chewy.

Mogu-chew: Grape

Mogu Chew Grape
Mogu Chew Grape

This is a simple grape flavored chew. The texture is very chewy, moreso than I like, and the taste is that of generic grape flavor. The taste doesn’t bother me at all, but the chewiness of the candy makes it so I can only have one at a time.

This is a cute little box of various chewy candies, flavored like apple, strawberry, ramune soda, and pineapple. They all taste great, and the box has an adorable little dispenser.

I like these a lot!

There are very similar Hi Chew bites available on Amazon!

Overall rating for August 2017: Another excellent value! Even if the boxes take a while to arrive, the new ‘direct from Japan’ system seems worth it, as the boxes have way more in them than they used to! Check out Skoshbox’s page if you’re interested in trying out a subscription for yourself.
