Skoshbox July 2016 Review – DEKABOX
July is my birthday month, and my boyfriend surprised me with a Dekabox! Normally, we just get the Skoshbox, since it would be difficult to keep up with all of the snacks the Dekabox provides, but I’ll admit that I was always pretty curious about how the middle sized subscription option fared in comparison to the small.
He opted to sign up for the extra accessory in this box as well, but it normally won’t come with one unless you pay the extra $2. The accessory is different every month, just like the snacks, but if you see one you didn’t get, the Skoshbox shop should eventually sell it.
This month’s accessory is a cute little bottle with two plastic emoji cats inside. It comes in three colors, which are randomly selected. I was lucky to get the pink one since I like that the best. I think it’s pretty cute, even if it serves no purpose but to look nice on my desk.
As for the snacks in this Dekabox, well, there are a lot! I’m going to separate the reviews by whether the snack is in the regular Skoshbox or not, so the first five snacks will be the Skoshbox ones. If you ordered a Skoshbox for this month, you would have received those snacks. Everything else is from the Dekabox.
Got it? Awesome! Let’s go!
First up is the Sour Switch Cola Gummy.
This is a gummy snack that tastes like cola, but with a sour punch. I was a little nervous about this one before I tried it, since I didn’t know exactly how sour it would be. Luckily, upon smelling the inside of the bag, I determined that it didn’t really smell too menacing; in fact, it smelled kind of like a cola gummy worm.
The taste is about as sour as the smell. If you eat one or two, it really isn’t sour at all, but if you eat more than that, the potency adds up. I stopped after two to be safe.
I enjoyed this. I think it did what it said it would — it brought a cola taste with a sour punch.
I think the bag size I received was really nice, too. 100g is a lot of gummies!
Next is Milky Candy.
Milky Candy is something I’ve heard about but admittedly never tried. I believe it’s been around for a long time, and has a great reputation.
The candy is individually wrapped, and appears to be hard, but quickly softens up in your mouth. It ends up having a taffy-like consistency, and the taste is smooth, milky (appropriately so) and creamy. I really enjoyed this!
Next, the Hello Kitty Ichigo Marshmallow.
This is something I’ve received a few times, though in different flavors (or different packaging, but it’s pretty much the same thing). This one is strawberry.
The marshmallow is as soft as always and the strawberry filling is strong, but pleasant and true to flavor.
There isn’t much else to say about it!
Now we have the Shiso Sora Mame.
This is a dried bean snack coated with umeboshi powder. As you’ve read in previous reviews of mine, I dislike umeboshi, so I was pretty terrified to try this.
Luckily, the umeboshi powder isn’t heavy on these, so they’re actually pretty pleasant. The only downside I have with them is how salty they get after you have a few. According to the nutrition facts, the pack is 20% of your daily intake of sodium, which kind of explains how salty they are.
That being said, this snack is nice if you eat it in moderation, which I’ve been doing!
Finally for the Skoshbox items, there’s the Pompompurin Pudding Pop.
I don’t know why I assumed this was going to taste like chocolate pudding before I opened the pack, honestly, since the lollipop is yellow, not brown.
Still, it does taste like pudding. I’d say it tastes like the standard flan flavor, with hints of vanilla and caramel. It’s REALLY good, and I wish I had gotten several of them in the box.
Best item from the Skoshbox group? I’d say the Milky Candy and the Pompompurin Pudding Pop tie for that title!
Now let me talk about the items exclusive to the Dekabox.
First, here are Matcha Truffle Chocolates.
I’ll admit that I’m not the biggest matcha fan. I know, I know, what am I doing subscribing to Japanese snack boxes then, right? Well, I like the flavor sometimes, usually if it’s mixed with others.
These chocolates are truffles, as stated on the bag, but they’re coated in matcha powder. The bag shows the chocolates to be really coated in powder, but I found the coating to actually be lighter than that. I appreciate that, since I don’t think I would really have enjoyed the truffles as much if the powder was super heavy.
The chocolate is smooth, creamy, and delicious. The matcha powder tastes like it should, and it gives a sharp contrast to the chocolate.
I didn’t really love these, since I don’t love matcha, but I liked them. If you really enjoy matcha, you’ll probably like these a lot.
I thought the bag provided was a very decent size.
Next is another matcha candy, called Sequoia Matcha Choco Wafer.
This is a cookie wafer, kind of like a KitKat, surrounded by chocolate and matcha flavored chocolate. The actual wafer differs a little from the package’s picture, but that’s not too surprising, nor is it bad. There’s just less white (I assume) chocolate there.
The blend of flavors works well, even better than the truffles. The matcha isn’t too strong, so I enjoyed this candy a lot more.
Next there’s the Jersey Milk Cookie.
These are individually wrapped cookies with something inside. I couldn’t quite figure out what based on the ingredients, but I’m guessing chocolate. (The ingredients state white chocolate, but the specks are brown.)
The cookies taste like milk, but sweet. They’re soft, but they don’t really crumble too much. These were extremely nice, and I would definitely consider purchasing them on their own.
I appreciated getting 10 cookies!
Finally, there’s the Baked Apple Chocolate.
This is an interesting candy. The idea is that you’re supposed to pop them in your broiler for 5-10 seconds, but …
I was lazy. I didn’t feel like waiting for the oven to heat up to put them in there for such a short amount of time, so I ate them cold.
They’re very sweet, and the apple flavor is super strong. I only ate one at the time of the review, but the apple taste lingered for quite a while afterward.
Since I like apple, I liked these. The white chocolate coating gave them a nice creaminess, while the cookie inside added a needed crunch. The difference in textures made for a nice little treat, I think.
I imagine these would taste better broiled, but like I said, I was lazy! I apologize for that, haha.
Rating: 4/5 COLD
Best Dekabox item? Jersey Milk Cookie! I want more…
What did I think about Dekabox?
I enjoyed it a lot! I liked how almost all of the portion sizes were large, which made the value higher. I thought the mix of snacks was nice, even if two were matcha flavored. My only criticism was that there were two matcha items, but they were unique, so it’s a minor criticism at the end of the day.
I think if you’re really in the mood for a lot of snacks, Dekabox is worth getting once in a while. It definitely added excitement to my day!
