Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3 Trailer – Thoughts
A trailer for the third season of Sailor Moon Crystal has just been posted, and I was pretty impressed when I watched it. I didn’t realize that some of the staff working on the series changed for this part, but it makes sense to me after seeing how nice this trailer looks.
One of the first things I notice is how must better the villains look here than they did in the preview for the second season (the Black Moon arc).
As you can see in the image above, Professor Tomoe’s face has been given a lot of attention — his eye is magnified a bit by the glasses lens, which is something I wouldn’t have expected the animators to bother drawing. The Witches 5 look good, though the trailer only shows them for a brief few seconds. I’ll have to really reserve my judgement on them, but if Professor Tomoe looks this good, they probably will too.
Second, I noticed that Sailor Moon’s attack (Moon Spiral Heart Attack) looks MILES better than the previous one did. Moon Princess Halation looked, for a lack of a better word, lazy. Moon Spiral Heart Attack (or the glimpse of it we see) already looks cleaner and more like the attacks from the classic anime. Having a nice background really, really helps this.
I’m sure you remember the famous Moon Princess Halation coming out from next to the Cutie Moon Rod attack, right? It was eventually fixed, but it shouldn’t have been like this in the first place. Moon Spiral Heart attack didn’t have this issue in the trailer, so I’m full of hope that it will look great in the anime.
Finally, the designs of the outer Guardians seem to be on point. Sailor Pluto unfortunately didn’t look as great as she could have in the trailer for season two, but the trailer for season three shows Neptune, Uranus, and Saturn looking good.
Sailor Neptune (Michiru) looks elegant here, capturing her character well. Sailor Uranus (Haruka) has been given extra attention, as you can see that she doesn’t have long eyelashes like the other Guardians. I definitely appreciate this detail.
Sailor Saturn (Hotaru) wasn’t shown for as long as the others, but her profile looks fine. Her eyes aren’t too big, like Chibi Moon’s was in the second season’s trailer, and her hair looks as it should. Chibi Moon also looks better than she did, and I really like that she’s not wearing a ton of lipstick anymore.
All in all, this trailer made me excited for this season of Sailor Moon Crystal. I think the change in staff was needed, and will definitely improve the show. How much, I can’t say yet, but I hope by a lot.
Sailor Moon Crystal will air again starting April 4th. This is not a Saturday, so my review will be a few days later than the episode. I assume we’ll still see an approximate twice-a-month schedule, but I don’t know for sure.
