JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Now Available on Amazon
The first two and a half parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are now available to stream on Amazon. This is pretty cool! Considering that the last animated piece to be released in America was the 1993/2000 OVA for Stardust Crusaders (which I’ll talk about in another post, promise) this is pretty big news.
Here’s the thing, though: Warner has the rights to the anime in America, whereas VIZ has the rights to the manga. Warner had previously announced that they’ll be releasing a DVD set for the first two parts of JoJo: Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency; this DVD set was originally slated to be released on July 28th, but has been pushed back to September 22nd according to Right Stuf, a popular anime/manga retailer.
Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency are dubbed by Warner. I personally dislike the dub from what I’ve heard, and from what I’ve read, the internet is mixed on their opinions of it. Either way, the DVDs will include the original Japanese audio so I’ll definitely be sticking with that when it comes out.
As of now, however, the dubbed episodes of Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency are available to stream on Amazon. Each episode is $2.99 for HD quality, so you’ll be paying a lot more for the first two parts this way as opposed to buying the DVDs. If you want the dubbed version and can’t wait for September 22nd, though, this is the option for you.
Will Warner be releasing Blu-rays? I have no idea, unfortunately. Right Stuf answered this question on their Twitter a while ago, explaining that they hadn’t received an answer from Warner on the matter. I don’t really understand keeping these episodes to DVD only, since Japan has had them on Blu-ray for over two years now; the difference in quality between DVD and Blu-ray is noticeable, too, so I can’t fathom why Warner would ‘cheap out’ and drop the Blu-ray option for us.
All I can say is that we’ll have to wait and see, but seeing as how it’s now August and the DVDs come out in September, I think if Blu-rays are released, they’ll be later than the DVDs, unfortunately.
In other news, episodes 1-24 of Stardust Crusaders are also available for streaming on Amazon. These episodes are subtitled, unlike the first two parts. I can assume the rest of Stardust Crusaders will be released relatively soon. Will this part be dubbed? Probably, since there was a test dub back in 2014. This test dub was done by Crunchyroll, so the cast might change. It’s another one of those ‘wait and see’ things, I think.
Keep an eye on this site to find out more! I’ll be keeping my eye out for information about more releases.
